Explanation
The tutorials were initially written by Jan Veit, the other tutorials are by other authors. The tutorials were developed to provide a straight forward approach to learning how to use the programs and to give a tour of the most important features.
The tutorials come in pdf format. You can download them directly from this website.

When you have made your changes, save them, and then close inkscape again.
Then add a new layer, make it visible, and merge it down onto the top layer.
Once that is done, all the new objects will be seen on the screen, and be available for your alterations.

Now, to make sure the colors work, I will
Use the Magic Wand tool (M) to select all the bits that make up the boy, and then copy them (Ctrl-C)
Select all the bits that make up the girl, and paste them to the new layer, Ctrl-V
Now I will start by making them blue
RMB, M, make sure the layer is highlighted, then use Shift-LMB, I to fill with color
Now I will make the colors of the baby orange
RMB, M, Ctrl-V, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V
Now I will make the girl's clothes yellow
RMB, M, Ctrl-V, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V

The next step is to make them all the same color (using the Magic Wand, as mentioned above).
RMB, M, Ctrl-V, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V, Ctrl-C
To make the child, the same, and everything else the same, too, you can select all the objects in the top layer, and
Ctrl-C, and then paste them all to the new layer (Ctrl-V)

or you can use the color picker. To do that, you need to select the top layer first, and then click on the color picker icon in the top right corner:
Then choose the color you want:
